How to point to FSServer through a client PC

Postby mvalotta » June 10 2005

Hello Thomas and everybody:
I´m pretty interested in FSFK using it through a network with Widefs, It seams great!
Im already a registered user of Wfs and FSmeteo. Both works fine on my client PC.I also installed FSFK trial version, both on server and client PC.
FSFK on client PC does recognize my aircraft and location through fsuipc and widefs, displaying the aircraft position on live watch map.
But during the installation, it asked me for my FS location. I dont have an fs copy on my client widefs PC.
I have the drive and the fs folder shared on the server, but the FSFK install program didnt show me the option to point to FS9 shared folder on the network, just the local drives on the client PC.
Sorry for my ignorance, everything is OK except this point that, to be honest, I dont know and Im not able to connect FSFK from the remote computer to the server running FS2004 bringing up scenery, flights on other data except that coming from Widefs.
I will really appreciate a bunch your help to do this and sorry for my basic level question.
Warm regards for all here!

Here are the steps to use FSFK via WideFS:

1. Create a share for your FS folder (make sure that file and share permissions are set correctly, so that the user on the WideFS PC can at least read the FS files)
2. Map this share to a drive on your WideFS PC
3. Open the FSFK options dialog and configure the FS path setting

Now you can use FSFK as it was installed on the FS PC. One Tip: If you have FSFK also installed on the FS PC, then create the scenery caches there and copy the following files to your FSFK WideFS installation: AFDCache*.dat and NAVCache*.dat. This way cache creation is a lot faster (due to the fact that FSFK would otherwise read all your FS sceneries via the network.)

Hope this helps

Thomas,

Can you not use a static LAN IP, for example 192.168.1.103, to effect the path for FSFK? Haven't tried it, but I know I'm having a problem mapping the FS computer (it's the WideFS client's fault and is a problem which no one seems to understand). But I do run WideFS by setting the server path to the static IP.

You can use \\192.168.1.103 or \\PC_Name. But the best is to map these shares to a local drive.

Dear Thomas:
I did exactly what you said above, and it works, in fact I can see my fsfolder on widefs client. The aircraft is detected and followed by FSFK and I can load the plan from my server. Tha aircarft is actually shown on flight watch map....but waypoints and contents of the world map are not displayed (the map iself yes of course).
Which could be the reason for this FSFK behavior on widefs client PC?
All the caches had been coppied to the main FSFK on client PC. All related folders and drives are shared and mapped in the network (I can access all of them from any point of the net). Folders on fsfk-client points to the right places.
Appreciated for your strong support.
Warmest regards.

You have to create a share for your FS flight plan folder too. The folder is located in your 'My Documents' folder. This is also described in the FSFK manual.

Dear Thomas:
Good day!
Yes, my server PC and all its important folders (including flight simulator files from My Documents on server) are mapped and correctly pointed on client pc and widefs-FSFK actually. This last in the options display. I may see the flight plan points on the respective flight plan FSFK display, but I cant see them over the map. The airport AFCAD map (dont know if it really is, but is very similar to afcad maps) is not displayed too.
I wonder if it should not be the OS. I´m on trying phase before buying and I have one copy installed on the server (WXP) and one on the client (and old PIII with Win Millenium). My future client will be win XP (I already building a new one just for widefs and related fs support programs).
Best regards and thanks for all.

Make sure that you have turned on the FS Scenery support options in FSFK. Otherwise you won't see any airport details. To display the flight plan on the map you need to press the corresponding toolbar button in the world map. Check the manual for more details on the 'live Watch' mode of the map window.

Re: How to point to FSServer through a client PC

Hello to everyone,

I am sure I am doing something wrong and I might be missing something, but I still don't get it how my FSFK installed on my LAPTOP can connect to my FS9 installed on my PC.
Both FSFK and FS are shared and visible on my network, but when I hit new flight button or connect to flight simulator and start logging then a pop up window comes up telling me ERROR: Cannot link to FSUIPC or WideFs.
I read this part :
1. Create a share for your FS folder (make sure that file and share permissions are set correctly, so that the user on the WideFS PC can at least read the FS files)
2. Map this share to a drive on your WideFS PC
3. Open the FSFK options dialog and configure the FS path setting

but I guess I didn't create a share folder properly...
I would really appreciate if someone could explain step by step...
Thanks!

You need WideFS for a remote connection. Is this installed and running?
